"What is kohl?"
The Arabic word “kajal or kohl” means carbon or charcoal. Charcoal is known for its fixative qualities and is used, amongst other things, in active charcoal water filters. When in contact with the eye, it captures dust, pollen and other particles and so allows lachrymal liquid to expel them. Kohl has been used for thousands of years both as a treatment and as make-up.
The best type of charcoal, according to ancient ayurvedic texts, is ghee charcoal. This is obtained by burning ghee (butter that has been clarified according to ayurvedic tradition) in an oil lamp. The soot that’s given off is captured on copper or silver plates and collected to make ghee charcoal, used for Lakshmi ayurvedic kohls.
